    I haven't upgraded mine to 3.0.1 yet. I read that it locks it out as well. I'm tethering right now as a matter of fact.

    Do not upgrade to 3.1. Tethering blocked, cannot jailbreak or unlock at the moment. Downgrades are impossible due to Apple no longer allowing 3.0 and 3.0.1 flashes. (for iPhone 3GS) Do not do a restore either, as it will give you 3.1.

    Are you guys paying the $30/mo data plan on top of the $20/mo texting plan? I'm looking into iphones and the $90/mo as the cheapest I can deal with is not attracting me as a customer.

    I'm paying $119 a month for my plan. That's with the 15% off from the US Army. My plan is 900 anytime $59.99, data plan $30, unlimited text $20 and nights at 7 can't remember how much.

    It allows you to modify your iPhones software. Depending on the version you are running it can also allow you to unlock it and put your iPhone on another carrier, i.e. T-Mobile.

    On another note, I finally updated my iPhone to 3.1.2. Lost my free tethering but gained MMS. Don't really need the free tethering anymore since I'll be at home the next 3 months.
