So Racegate and I came up with an idea while on the Yummies cruise last weekend.

Seems like there are several DIY'ers on here that are lacking garage space or a lift. Would anyone have any interest in pitching in and renting an actual space where folks could work on there vehicles?

I was actually thinking about this as a business idea a while ago. I know they must have them somewhere already though. The garage could offer memberships or hourly rates and have storage for wheels/tires/cars, maybe a lounge/bar. Something along those lines anyways. Just not sure there would be enough interest int his area outside of YR to make it worth it.

As I see it in my head... It would be like a giant man cave...

Wash area, Lounge, lift... We take inventory of what folks have, and decide what we want on top of it

Tough to make it a business because of insurance. You would most certainly be unable to acquire liability insurance for untrained customers around a lift

I thought I had heard of one a while ago, but wasn't sure if I was making it up in my head. Didn't even think about the insurance factor, great call. I'm loving the thought of a giant man cave idea though.... It could be the official YR headquarters...

I looked at a Porsche for sale at this place in RI it cost $250 a month. They did have some type of service bays downstairs, but I don’t think that was something anyone could just use.

I've always though this is a money making idea. Just tough to insure here in MA.

Perhaps making it a members only club, and the lift and tools an amenity. That or employing a mechanic to oversee all the work that is done to satisfy the insurance companies.

Adding in a Man Cave with a nice ventilation system (cigars) and You'd have a pretty good buy in I expect.

Also: Most military bases have this type of thing. Because they own you and your life they don't care about insurance though..

This places oil change special would be a GOLD MINE. 30 minutes on a lift plus waste disposal for $10.. damn good deal.

At the cruise last weekend I was talking about this with some of you guy I think. I was talking about the Garage Condo idea and showing the pics to a few of you. They have them more out west. it is basically what you guys are talking about being the ultimate man cave.

I too would want to do something like this, But as I was saying over the weekend, I would want to close off the top and actually have a furnished living quarters.

These are not legal in MA without a lot of extra work.
Something about needing a vapor barrier and separate HVAC between the work-space and the living space. Thats why people build them with a half wall and don't put a bed it in. Gets around the codes.

The place you guys are thinking of is called U Do It Auto Works in Nashua, but it recently closed...

Its a great idea, but a VERY tough business model...

I would more recommend a membership with scheduling rather than just a walk in...

Something like where you charge a monthly fee, and for that fee you get x amount of time in the shop and access to its tools..

The military does something similar as well. I know quite a few navy guys that can rent shop/lift space on base to work on their cars for like $4/hr (Obviously it wouldn't be that cheap though)..

Ok so how many of you that say you are interested, what would you be willing to pay for a space that would allow you access to a lift and tools?

I'm thinking more of a membership/lounge atmosphere as once it becomes a business there are a lot of extra regulations that would be unavoidable
