Should seriously consider a BMW R1150R. Very quick bikes for what they are. Considering its a sport touring bike, it's great around town and on the highway. You can hang with the best of them, Ninja's and all, and its a classic BMW design. It is air cooled, so you do have to be careful if you find yourself stuck in traffic during the summer, but it gets great gas mileage, and has a great feel to it. You could easily ride it up and down the east coast if you want or take it out west. My dad has two BMW's. A K1200 and an R1150R and both have over 30k miles. We ride them everywhere. They can be had now for relatively cheap $$ around 3/4k was the cheapest I've seen on CL too. Just a thought.
