  1. #1 Default which tablet?
so am thinking of getting y 10 year old a tablet for xmas. I think it is down to a Apple iPad mini or a Google Nexus 7.

    Thoughts on which is best?

Kindle Fire 7" HD is $169. I don't know if there's going to be a black friday special on these so you may want to wait a week and see what's available.

Just a note on the general black friday $99 tablets, be sure they are the spec you're looking for. A lot of off-brand old-tech crap comes out of hiding for black friday fliers. Make sure there are decent reviews for the exact model/spec you're shopping. If you give your kid a tablet that won't connect to any wifi networks and only has 300k of available memory and requires a USB dongle to connect headphones, your kid will end up hating you.... or Santa.

Shows sold out, and on the main tablet page it's listed at the normal ~230 price.

Which tablet do their friends have? Seriously. Because it's not about the technology... it's about the apps/games and the sharing with their friends.

Figured it out. Gen 1 was on sale, and now they're gone. Gen 2 is full price.

Ahhh... I was wondeirng what the difference was...

I would still go with a decent name brand, cheap tablet for a 10 year old. I wouldn't spend iPad money because its not a question of if it will get damaged, its a question of when...

I wouldn't buy any tablet for a 10 year old. When I was around that age, I got a Nintendo 64...and it was more or less stationary. I wouldn't trust any kid with something that costs $300+ and can be dropped easily.

Yea I also wonder why a 10 year old should have a tablet. Shouldn't he be locked in his room studying books? (But srs, expensive and not needed)

Nintendo 64 was the coolest electronic entertainment device available at the time you got it. Tablets are the cool toy today. You aren't old enough for 'back in MY day' statements yet.

my 9y/o nephew and 7 y/o niece have ipads.. there's a lot of kids stuff on there.... creative stuff and thinking games.. and minecraft-- modern day legos..

I'd say it was equivalent to owning an Apple II or mac when i was a young.. plus they get a head start on normal every day technologies like web browsers, googling, wikipedia, Skype, email, texting etc,...

did you have a gameboy when you were 10 years old? I never understood the argument against younger kids having electronics.

Besides, having a tablet can help kids overcome glossophobia, and learn how to ask girls out. Pretty important skill sets for 10 years olds to have.
    Oh Yeah!

I have nothing against young kids having electronics, I just don't think it's prudent to give a 10 year old something fragile. Gameboys were 10x more durable than ipads are.
