I'm aware I'm posting about an event more than a year out, bear with me.

This is not an official YR trip. It is not and will not be an official YR rally. This is a trip I've wanted to do, and I want some friends to come with me. It should be like the last Cabot trip in terms of planning and execution.

I've been wanting to do this trip since college. And since I turn 30 next June, I figured I might as well just go and do it. I'm posting this so far out because of how big the trip is. It's going to be minimum 8 days, it's going to have long driving days, it's going to be insanely fun. I'm throwing it up here so that people can think about joining me. I'll probably book hotels/ferry/etc late this year.

This is what I have line up as a super early outline.
Day 1: Leave from NH and drive to St. John. Same route and hotel as the last Cabot Trip

Day 2: Same route as last Cabot trip, but instead of stopping at Baddek, drive to the ferry at the northern side of Cape Breton.
No Hotel this night, take the overnight ferry to Newfoundland and sleep on the boat

Day 3: Drive across Newfoundland. This is the longest driving day, but it should be beautiful. About 560 miles to the eastern side of Newfoundland.

Day 4: Play in Newfoundland. Drive some roads, site see, be a tourist, don't care, do whatever you want on this day.

Day 5: Drive back across Newfoundland
No hotel this night, overnight ferry again

Day 6: Play on Cabot. Do the loop we did last time. eat amazing chowder, drive epic roads, find moose, do not run out of gas. Spend the night at the Inverary Resort and drink by a fire.

Day 7: Drive back to St. John with a bay of fundy side stop.

    Day 8: Drive home

That's the base trip. I may add another day in for newfoundland so I can see more of the island, or maybe another day around cabot, maybe both. It's going to be a long trip, i'm already looking at over 3000 miles. I expect that number will scare some people away.

not looking for commitments now, just sharing my early plan in the hopes that some people may consider coming with me.

It's run by Marine Atlantic http://www.marineatlantic.ca/en/

they have two routes, both out of North Sydney NS. One is 6-8 hours, one is 16 hours. I need to look at things closer, maybe it makes sense to travel out one way and back another so we don't drive across the island twice.

It looks like it depends what boat you get, but most seem to have 4 bed and 2 bed rooms, plus "delux" rooms. Again, more research will be done.

Would be an awesome trip! Did similar in 2012, doing about 3k miles in 7 days, 1/3rd of which was dirt road. I'd be interested in this too, since I didn't get to explore eastern Newfoundland.

8 days is probably a good amount of time. That ferry from Cape Breton to Newfoundland is comfortable. We also took it overnight, though ours was severely delayed for some reason, so we didn't end up departing until something like 2 or 3am.

    This was our room:

I would split the drive across Newfoundland into two days. First, you'll want to take your time to take in the sites and not fee rushed. Second, you do not want to drive there at night. Way too many moose!

sounds great! Wanted to explore that part of Canada for a while.
BTW, I just came back from a road-trip around California and Nevada. 2000mi in 4 days. Very enjoyable. I'd be definitely down to join your 3000mi trip.

    Subscribed for more.

the interest is there. Not entirely sure if I want to drive that much/would like some down time in between personally. I can always do the drive up to and back from Newfoundland with the group, and spend the 3 days in between on Newfoundland leisurely doing nothing while the rest of you loop the island.
    Oh Yeah!

Just throwing some alternate info up.

The other boat route leaves Syndey Nova Scotia at 5:30pm, and takes 14-16 hours to get to Argentina Newfoundland. So that's an arrival time of 7:30-9:30am. It's also about 1.5 hours from the hotel in St. John's Newfoundland. That might be a better option for heading out, be at the destination before noon, have the rest of the day to just explore, hang out, whatever.

Complications, we'd need to make sure we can get to the ferry on time. It's roughly 6.5 hours of driving from the Saint John New Brunswick Hotel to the ferry. I'm sure we need to be at the ferry something like 1-2 hours before departure. Earlier is better. So if we assume 9 hours drive time with lunch and gas, and worst case have to be there by 3:30, that's like a 6:30am departure.

Alternatively a night could be spent somewhere on nova scotia. But it needs to be balanced to control the overall trip length.

Mostly me just thinking out loud. I'm good with a few crazy long day, not sure if other people are.

In pending details, definitely sounds like a trip of a lifetime. The miles don't really scare me, the memories would far outweigh any wear/tear!
