  1. #1 Default Datsun 240Z project
I have owned a few other Z's in the past and I plan to keep this one around for a while. I picked it up cheap and its going under the knife for some underside repairs and paint prep. I had initially thought of a straight LT1 swap but have decided to keep it somewhat genuine and am rebuilding the L24 head and mating that to a 2.8 bottom end and doing some upgrades along the way.

    72 240Z 4 speed

....off to get the bodywork done:

Updates from my body guy. He started making a rotisserie for the datsun and tested it on a mk3 gti project car:

Rounded up some materials and started choppin it up

the rotating assy we came up with. a front wheel bearing out of a new 2 wheel drive chevy P/U. with the rotor for indexing

    think its long enough?

90% done. needs the indexing holes, casters, holes drilled for mounting the car, and holes drilled to hold the spacing between the two ends.

He will be pulling the motor, interior, glass, etc. to start the strip down soon.

I will be posting updates along the way

so you decided not to do the LT swap after all? Too expensive? or what?

Sick man. What a coincidence. I picked up a 72 240Z a couple months ago and I'm restoring it with some modern day mods.

Mines stripped to a shell right now and I plan to have it to bare metal in a few weeks. I'm hoping to have mine doen by mid spring.

Thanks guys. Its going to be my car I hope to have when I am an old man. I am holding off on the LT1 to focus on more of the body to ensure it lasts as long as possible. Its getting a 2.8 bottom end with the 2.4 head which will raise the compression. I am having the head ported and polished with a 270 cam with a header on it as well. It should be a fun little car for the time being

I'm not sure what your budget is for the motor, but have you considered dropping in a more modern Nissan motor? The RB motors can be monsters, and since they're iron-block inline 6's they keep the character of the car. RB20DETs (2.0 turbo) out of skylines are quite cheap now. The SR20DET is also a solid choice, and would probably save a lot of weight since it is an inline 4 with an aluminum block.

I'm not trying to push you in the direction, I just know that having an engine built can end up costing a good amount of money, and you can pick up an RB or SR motor as a complete unit and drop it in without having to do any machine work on it.

They're possibly a little easier to install than an LT or LS, but a fair bit less expensive.

    new update from my mechanic:

started digging into the ol girl today trying to clear out some room to get the motor and trans out, so i started with the front end. only worked on it for a couple hours and had to fight with a bunch of old rusty bolts. but got the right front pretty much off.
