  1. #1 Default S65 Exhaust Is Done!
After calling Fabspeed and getting a quote for $2700 for a full exhaust system, and them telling me I needed to bring the car to PA, I decided I’d go back to Lou’s! I’ve had pretty much every car I have ever owned taken care of there with the exception of the 996TT. I visited the shop about 2-3 weeks ago and we took a look under the car together to talk about options. I told them I wanted it louder, but not insane, out of control, pull me over, never pass inspection loud. It’s still a luxury cruiser after all. I have to keep it a good ride for long journeys and back seat passengers.

It was important that I keep the factory AMG tips too. This could prove to be difficult, because they’re dual on each side, but a muffler would be single in-single out. So we’d either have to find a small enough muffler to fit in the space on both sides that was single in-double out, or make a custom Y-pipe to reuse my tips.

The plan of attack was simple really. Cut the mufflers off, listen to the exhaust. Decide it was too loud, and put in some resonators or some glass packs. Probably then decide it was still too loud, and add some Magnaflow’s, perhaps with or without the resonators/glass packs. Then hope that system was louder than the stock AMG, call it a happy medium, and be done. I’m pretty tight with the guys at the Peabody Lou’s since I have taken so many cars there over the years, so they’ve got no problem with me hanging out in the shop while they work, snapping pictures, even helping out a little.

So off the mufflers went with just 2 quick cuts. Now I know you can’t rev it past 3000 in park, and that you can’t spool the turbos, so this test is just a partial test really. Since there’s no “real” load on the engine, it’s not going to sound as loud as it will breaking the sound barrier on the highway. Then came the moment of truth. How insane would it be? Would the twin turbo V12 be punishingly loud with no mufflers? The time had come. Dave (from Lou’s) started the car while I stood directly behind it. To my surprise, it wasn’t anywhere near as loud as I had expected. It was a very deep, low, aggressive tone, but it wasn’t overkill by any means at all. We revved it a bit, and decided to skip the resonators, skip the glass packs, skip the mufflers, and go straight pipes. This required some stainless steel pipe and a few custom measurements and bends. The creation of a mini Y-pipe from scratch and then some welding. We were done in about 90 minutes!

To describe the type of sound best, I think it sounds like a big power boat, running inboard motors. It’s very low in frequency and tone. It grumbles angrily. Very deep, deeper than my Suburban even, which I am sure has bigger cylinders (although less). The volume level is very similar to FatMike’s CL500 with cutouts, as expected. It’s not too loud or obscene, but it’s certainly well louder than stock. I’m really happy with this cheap solution.

It's not very loud unless you get on it, and then it gets loud. I think you'll need to hear it in person.

Got any links to sound-clips similar to what you're thinking of? I can listen and tell you if it sounds at all alike under load. I can only imagine adding mufflers would make it quieter though, and I think I wouldn't want it any quieter than it is. In the real world, it's not as NUTS as the video makes it sound I feel like.

I haven't heard a flyby, or drive away like that yet of my car, but I don't think it's going to sound like that. I hear the tone you're talking about now, and I don't think I have one that sounds like that.

It drones of course, but very minimally, and the revs at which it drones aren't at highway speeds. It tends to drone the most from like 5-20mph, and then it's not bad at all. I think with all the sound deadining material Mercedes builds into the car, it keeps the cabin pretty quiet. You're welcome to ride/drive it whenever and see what you think for yourself too!
