Petty Amazing. Hopefully this means we are closer to 1000lbs 3-series so Christov can continue his love affair with the brand:

But is it strong? Carbon isn't really all that light, its just that it is light for how strong it is.

No it's not strong. It will be used for things like packing material.

Aerogel is a cooler version of this stuff.

I beg to differ with the headline. They didn't invent the material (apparently in the demo they used nickel). They invented the process and structure.

They did mention sound deadening as a potential application. Not sure if that means it could replace sound insulation in cars. I would think that would be a welcome use.

Want to know more about Aerogels, check out my companies website...

Then buy some for your houses, or as the ultimate low weight heat barrier for your rides...

Aerogel is the ultimate in lightweight insulator.... also can be fairly strong if made as a polymer composite... strong, light, and crazy expensive to make...

I work for a company that has commercialized aerogels for insulating materials... check them out Aspen Aerogels

Agreed...I make/research aerogel materials for a living... The material never fails to amaze me with its incredible insulating and absorption properties... Truely is solid smoke when made properly....

This is not camera trickery, the blocks are actually solid aerogels...
